Twitter is one of the popular microblogging websites which comes down as users in specific parts of the world including India are not able to tweet. But it’s so far it’s not clear accurately which countries have been affected by the outage. But according to the Downdetector website, users in Japan are affected the most followed by users in the US and the UK. A majority of the users are facing effects on the web client, while some are facing the same problem in Android and iOS devices.
While users can open the website and view the tweets, they are not able to tweet anything. At the time of tweeting an error message shows up like,
“Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing – we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.”
Twitter Administrators has not yet made any official statement on the issue on its status page yet. Also, there are two other outages this year, it went down for 45 minutes on March 25 this year and 23 minutes on November 6 last year, according to the Currently Down website.
One of the large outages like this issue, the Twitter has faced in October last year. The Microblogging site let down on October 21 for almost 3 hours during the huge online attack that blocked access to several popular websites in the US. These added Amazon, Spotify, Tumblr, Reddit, PayPal among others.
The criminals reportedly used Mirai; it is an easy-to-use program that is said to offer even amateur hackers to take over online devices and use them to begin DDoS attacks.
A Distributed Denial of Service attack is also known as DDoS when a website is purposely brought down by traffic from many sources. It is a standard method for cyber attacks.
